Baby Scales

Medela recommends that babies under 20 pounds be weighed by placing them in the basket of the BabyChecker. Generally, infants over 20 pounds would be weighed with the basket removed. The BabyChecker can be used for readings up to 40 pounds.

When rented, the BabyChecker includes a carrying case in the cost of rental. If purchased, the carrying case can be ordered separately.

Do you have the scale in front of you?
Is the baby’s weight more than 1.102 lbs (500 grams)? Yes
No-if the baby weighs less than 1.102 lbs, you can use this scale, however, it will not lock the weight into memory. Some older scales will only lock in over 2.204 lbs (1000 grams). Are you using the scale with batteries or with the AC Adapter? If Batteries, remove the battery compartment cover from the bottom of the scale housing and correctly place the 6 “C” batteries. When the battery power is low, the display will show LO. If using the AC Adapter, push the small end of the AC Adapter into the receptacle and then plug into the wall outlet.
Is the scale on a flat and level surface? Yes
No - To level the scale; adjust the four legs under the scale until the bubble appears in the center of the Level Gauge. You must dress the baby in the clothes and/or blankets to be worn for breastfeeding. Press the "ON/ZERO" button and wait until a beep is heard and a 0.000 appears in the digital display and it shows CENTER ZERO.
Do you prefer to weigh the baby in pounds or grams?
For grams - Select on the right side of the scale housing the gram measurement.
For pounds - Select on the right side of the scale housing the lb/oz. measurement.
Did you place a cover or blanket on the basket?
Yes - Depress the “ON/ZERO” button again until you hear another beep and see the arrow pointing to “NET.” You will leave the cover or blanket on the scale.
No - proceed to next question. Now place the baby on the basket, holding one hand just above the baby. Wait until the digital display stops fluctuating. When you see the “LOCK” arrow on the digital display, you will hear a beep. This is the baby’s before feeding weight. Press “WEIGHT ENTRY”
Do you see where the arrow is next to “MEMORY WEIGHT?” This means that the baby’s before feeding weight is locked into memory. If you want to keep a log of your baby's weight, you should write the weight down.

If that does not work then Hold down the Before Nursing Button while turning on the scale, F1 will blink on the display, hit the After Nursing button a couple of times until F4 is on the display then hit the Reweigh button, the program should read H60 0. If the display already reads H60 0 the scale needs to be returned to Medela for repair, the scale most likely has bad load cell. If the display does not read H60 0 you will need to reset the display program. Press the Before Nursing button until the H is displayed, use the Weight Entry button to adjust the display to 6, the After nursing button to change 0, and Reweigh button for blank space 0. Scale program is then reset. If you continue to have problems, call Medela Customer Service to obtain an RMA to return for repair.

Includes a leak-resistant pocket and extra liner that provide added protection. Individually wrapped for hygiene and convenience.

Breast Milk

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows mothers flying with, and without, their child to bring breast milk in quantities greater than 3 ounces as long as it is declared for inspection at the security checkpoint. Please check the TSA website for the most up-to-date information regarding restrictions.

Thaw milk overnight in the refrigerator, or hold the bottle under warm running water until thawed. You can also place the sealed container in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes to bring it to body temperature. Do not let the water reach the level of the container cap.
Thawed milk is safe in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
CAUTION: Never microwave breast milk. Microwaving can cause severe burns to baby’s mouth from hot spots that develop in the milk during microwaving. Microwaving can also change the composition of breast milk.

- You can safely store your breast milk for up to 10 hours* with Pump In Style Advanced and Freestyle breast pump cooler bags.
- Direct exposure to the sun, like leaving the cooler in a car, severely reduces the cooling effectiveness.
- Breast milk is safe stored in a cooler at/or below 59 degrees for up to 24 hours.
- The liquid inside the cooling elements is water with food grade dye. The liquid is non-toxic.
- Medela does not have recommendations for storing breast milk with dry ice. Consult a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for further information.
*When ice pack is frozen solid

In the past it was thought that mothers needed to make more and more milk as their babies grew. Scientists now know that a healthy milk supply remains fairly constant over the six (6) months of exclusive breastfeeding. Your baby will take the amount he needs.
During the early weeks, babies eat very frequently and grow very quickly. By day 10-14, babies should regain any weight they lost after birth. For the next few months babies will gain about an ½ ounce to 1 ounce a day.
Around three (3) to four (4) months, a breastfed baby’s rate of grown begins to slow down. Your milk supply will continue to satisfy the baby until it is time to introduce solids at 6 months.
Be the end of the first week of life, women who are breastfeeding one baby normally make between 19 to 30 ounces of milk each day. Infants between one (1) and six (6) months of age normally drink an average of 19 to 30 ounces a day.
An average size “meal” for a baby is between three (3) to five (5) ounces of breastmilk. Formula is harder to digest and less well absorbed. Formula fed babies may need larger feeds. Consult your healthcare professional for advice.

Rarely, some mothers notice their defrosted breastmilk has a soapy taste or odor. This is due to lipase, an enzyme, which helps to digest the fat content of the breastmilk. If this occurs, scald the breastmilk (do not bring to a boil) on a stove until tiny bubbles appear along the sides of the pan; do this before freezing. The scalding process will neutralize the enzyme, preventing the soapy taste or smell.

Medela does not suggest the use of bottle liners as anything placed into the bottle can interfere with the valve assembly causing lack of suction. If you wish to use a bottle liner, pump into Medela bottles and then pour the collected breast milk into the bottle liner.

Calma has been designed to be used with Medela's bottles and containers. We have not done testing on other manufacturer's containers. You may find that you can thread Calma onto other bottles but you may find that this combination may leak or cause other issues. We do not recommend using Calma with any other manufacturer containers.

- Press base down.
- Lift nipple from top and remove silicone nipple.

- Rinse all separated parts in cool water to remove breastmilk.
- Wash all separated parts in warm, soapy water.*
- Rinse all separated parts with clear water.
- Allow all separated parts to air dry in a clean area.
Note: You can also wash all separated parts on top rack of dishwasher.
*It is not recommended to use a bottle brush with Calma.
CAUTION: Do not leave feeding parts in direct sunlight or heat, as this may weaken or damage parts.
Sanitizing
- In addition to cleaning, Calma can be sanitized once per day by boiling:
- Separate all parts.
- Choose a pot that is large enough so parts. DO NOT rest on the sides or bottom while boiling.
- Fill the pot with water and bring to a boil.
- Carefully drop parts into boiling water, and boil for 10 minutes.
- Gently remove parts from water with tongs and place on a clean surface.
- Allow all separated parts to air dry in a clean area.

Make sure all parts are completely dry before storing. When parts are not in use, put in clean plastic bag or store in a container with a lid. Alternatively, the parts can be wrapped in clean paper or cloth towel. Do NOT store wet or damp parts.

- It is normal for pumped milk to vary in color and consistency depending on your diet. Stored milk will separate into layers and the cream will rise to the top. Gently swirl (don’t shake) the bottle to mix the milk layers.
- Avoid adding freshly pumped milk to already cooled milk. You can add small amounts of cooled breast milk to the same refrigerated container throughout the day.
- Pumped milk may be added to frozen milk provided it is first chilled and the quantity is less than what is frozen.
- Store your milk in Medela’s BPA-free breast milk collection bottles or in storage bags specifically designed for breast milk, such as Medela’s BPA-free Pump & Save™ bags.
- Freeze milk in two (2) to four (4) ounce portions. Small amounts thaw more quickly. You will waste less milk this way. Be sure to leave some extra room at the top of the container so the bottle or bag will not overflow when freezing or thawing.
- Seal containers tightly. Write the date on a piece of tape and place on the bag or bottle. Use the oldest milk first.
- If you do not plan to use the milk within a few days, freeze it right away in the coldest section of your freezer.
To help prevent accidental leaks:
- Ensure that the zipper on the bag closed properly.
- If milk is trapped in the zipper, attempt to clean out the milk. Milk in the zipper may expand during freezing, causing a potential leak.
- Handle bags with care once frozen. Be careful not to drop bags or have bags bang together.
- Store bags in the upright standing position to prevent damage. Do not store bags lying flat or stacked on top of each other.

- Place newest bottles or bags of breastmilk in the tray just behind the "IN" arrow, naturally rotating bottles or bags already in the tray toward the "OUT" arrow.
- When ready to feed, remove bottle or bag from the side of the tray with the "OUT" arrow.
- Arrows remind the person feeding baby that the older breastmilk is used first to help prevent wasted/spoiled milk.

Cleaning
- Prior to first use, bring water to boil then place lids & bottles in boiling water for 10 minutes.
- For regular cleaning, all components may be washed on top rack of dishwasher. Labeling lids and breast milk bottles may be sanitized in boiling water for 10 minutes. To hand wash, rinse in cool water to remove breast milk, wash in warm soapy water and rinse with clear water. Air dry in clean area and store when not in use. Do NOT store wet or damp parts. Labeling lids and breast milk bottles may also be sanitized using a Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bag.
Safety
- Always test temperature of breast milk before feeding to your baby.
- Always inspect the bottle, nipple and other components before and after each use.
- To prevent possible choking hazard, test strength of nipple by pulling on bulb portion. If nipples appear cracked or torn, discontinue use immediately.
- Infants must not be bottle fed without adult supervision.
- Do not allow child to walk or run with bottle.
- Do not let child take bottle to bed or self-feed for long periods of time.
- Do not attempt to enlarge the nipple hole.
- Nipples should not be used as pacifiers.
- IMPORTANT: Plastic bottles and component parts become brittle when frozen and may break when dropped. Also, bottles and component parts may become damaged if mishandled, e.g. dropped, over-tightened, or knocked over. Take appropriate care in handling bottles and components. Do not use the breast milk if bottles or components become damaged.

Calma is compatible with all Medela containers, including the Colostrum containers, 80 ml, 5 oz and 8 oz bottles.

Each silicone nipple is stamped with an “S” for Slow-flow or an “M” for Medium-flow.
Wide base slow flow 0-4 months.
Wide base medium flow 4-12 months.

Medela breast milk bottles are made of FDA food contact grade polypropylene. Medela bottles are BPA-Free and designed for safe feeding and long-term storage of breast milk.
Polypropylene has a recycle number of 5 or PP stamped into the plastic item. Medela only uses new, virgin materials in manufacturing of all products.

Multiple nipple sizes are not required as the baby controls the flow of milk through vacuum. The baby will apply more or less vacuum to Calma as its need for milk changes throughout breastfeeding duration.

- Freeze milk in two (2) to four (4) ounce portions. Small amounts thaw more quickly. You will waste less milk this way. Be sure to leave some extra room at the top of the container so the bottle or bag will not overflow when freezing or thawing.
- Seal containers tightly. Write the date on a piece of tape and place on the bag or bottle. Use the oldest milk first.
- If you do not plan to use the milk within a few days, freeze it right away in the coldest section of your freezer.
To help prevent accidental leaks:
- Ensure that the zipper on the bag closed properly.
- If milk is trapped in the zipper, attempt to clean out the milk. Milk in the zipper may expand during freezing, causing a potential leak.
- Handle bags with care once frozen. Be careful not to drop bags or have bags bang together.
- Store bags in the upright standing position to prevent damage. Do not store bags lying flat or stacked on top of each other.
- Place newest bottles or bags of breastmilk in the tray just behind the "IN" arrow, naturally rotating bottles or bags already in the tray toward the "OUT" arrow.
- When ready to feed, remove bottle or bag from the side of the tray with the "OUT" arrow.
- Arrows remind the person feeding baby that the older breastmilk is used first to help prevent wasted/spoiled milk.
Cleaning
- Prior to first use, bring water to boil then place lids & bottles in boiling water for 10 minutes.
- For regular cleaning, all components may be washed on top rack of dishwasher. Labeling lids and breast milk bottles may be sanitized in boiling water for 10 minutes. To hand wash, rinse in cool water to remove breast milk, wash in warm soapy water and rinse with clear water. Air dry in clean area and store when not in use. Do NOT store wet or damp parts. Labeling lids and breast milk bottles may also be sanitized using a Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bag.

Multiple nipple sizes are not required as the baby controls the flow of milk through vacuum. The baby will apply more or less vacuum to Calma as its need for milk changes throughout breastfeeding duration.

The new 105° opening angle and oval shape of the PersonalFit Flex breast shields allows more flexibility for mom to position the shield in different ways while she pumps, based on what’s comfortable for her. When let-down occurs, mom’s milk ducts get bigger – the new shape and angle allows the milk to flow more freely. Changing the opening angle of the flange from 90 degrees to 105 degrees made a difference; it better matched the contour of the breast and reduced compression of the milk ducts, which allows milk to flow more freely through them. This change resulted in increased volume of milk expressed during a pump session - 11.8 percent more overall on average. - Make sure the battery has been inserted into the pump. When first opening the Freestyle packaging, the battery is inside the top portion of the plastic tray that contains the pump.
- Battery may not be properly inserted into the pump. Make sure the “This side down” message is inserted toward the bottom of the pump and that the pull tab is facing up. When properly inserted the battery should easily slide into the battery compartment.
- Make sure pump is plugged into a wall outlet and the power cord symbol is displayed when charging

The Pump In Style Battery Pack is intended for use with Pump In Style breast pumps (manufactured in January 2008 and later) ONLY.
The Battery Pack uses 8 AA alkaline batteries, or, for more consistent pump performance, use rechargeable batteries.
Each will provide approximately 2 hours of pumping time. It is recommended that batteries be replaced or recharged between the 10th and 12th pumping session.

1. Turn off breast pump
2. Unplug breast pump from power source.
3. Remove tubing by pulling straight out of tubing ports. Do not wiggle or pull tubing at an angle.
4. Remove tubing from breast shield.
5. Rinse tubing in cool water to remove breast milk.
6. Wash tubing in warm soapy water.
· Rinse tubing with clear water.
· Hang to air dry.
7. Snap off the faceplate using the thumb tab.
8. Soak in warm soapy water for 5 minutes.

The Pump In Style Battery Pack is intended for use with Pump In Style breast pumps (manufactured in January 2008 and later) ONLY.
The Battery Pack uses 8 AA alkaline batteries, or, for more consistent pump performance, use rechargeable batteries.
Each will provide approximately 2 hours of pumping time. It is recommended that batteries be replaced or recharged between the 10th and 12th pumping session.
Pump in Style recently updated it’s AC power adaptor as of June 1st, 2019. With this new adaptor, when traveling internationally, there are 3 power options:
- Use the Battery Pack that was included with your Pump In Style® Advanced breast pump.
- Purchase the 9 volt Portable Vehicle Adaptor (sold separately) item 67174.
- Use the power adaptor that was included with your Pump in Style® Advanced breast pump with universal prong converters (sold separately, not a Medela item)

Before using for the first time, clean and sanitize kit parts: breast shields, breast shield connectors, white membranes, yellow valves, breast milk bottles and lids.
CAUTION: Take apart and wash all parts that come in contact with your breast and breast milk immediately after use to avoid dry up of milk residues and to prevent growth of bacteria.

2. Twist and pull the yellow valves off of the breast shield connectors.
3. Remove the white membranes from the yellow valves.
4. Rinse in cool water all separated parts that came in contact with your breast and breast milk in order to remove breast milk residue.

a. Washing in sink:
· Soak all separated parts in warm soapy water for 5 minutes.
· Clean with a clean dish-cloth or soft brush.
· Rinse all separated parts with clear water.

- If single pumping, make sure the port plug is placed into one of the single pumping ports.
- Make sure white membrane is laying flat against the yellow valve head. Check that the yellow valve head is clean and not damaged. Refer to the assembly instructions.
- Make sure the diaphragm cap or faceplate on the front of the breastpump fits evenly and securely.
- Make sure the ends of the tubings are fit securely into the backs of the breastshields and into the ports on the diaphragm cap or faceplate.

Yes, all PersonalFit breast shields work on the Harmony breast pump.

Prior to each use:
1. Disassemble the PersonalFit™ breastshield, pump body, valve, membrane and bottle. Note: All parts are to be disassembled and washed separately for the pump to function efficiently.
2. Wash remaining parts in dishwasher or in soapy water and rinse well.
3. Air dry parts on clean towel and cover when not in use.
Under normal use, the pump handle and diaphragm/stem only need to be cleaned periodically or when it is apparent they have become soiled. Do not remove small white o-ring from stem.

No, Medela does not cover shipping to recycle breast pumps. Through the Medela Recycles program, moms have a solution to properly recycle their breast pump through a trusted third-party provider.

Medela does not provide a shipping label for recycling breast pumps. A return label is provided to identify the required tracking number and shipping address. You are able to ship directly through the mail service provider of your choice to complete the recycling process.
What is the return label?
Once you complete the recycling process, a return label will immediately display on your screen. This return label provides a unique tracking number and the shipping address. You will need to adhere this return label to your shipping box. You have two options to do this.
- Print immediately - Be sure you have connection to a printer.

Increased humidity inside the incubator being applied for the treatment of the baby, may have a negative impact on the electric/electronic system of the Bilibed or even create an electrical shock hazard. If oxygen or other gases are used for the treatment of the baby inside the incubator, this may create a fire/explosion hazard.

When the Symphony message reads, "invalid card" it could mean that the card in the pump is not the correct program card; the card could be damaged or the card is not inserted correctly.
Unplug the pump and remove the card. Check the card to make sure it is the correct card and also check for damage. Replace if necessary. Make sure the card is inserted in the direction of the arrows and the arrows are visible.
Plug in the pump and press the let-down button and the power button at the same time. Hold for several seconds and release. Try the pump again. If this does not correct the problem, the pump would need to be sent back the rental station for return to Medela.

The button all the way to the left is the on/off button. The knob in the center of the unit controls the suction and speed. The button all the way to the right is the "let down" button. This button interrupts the first phase (stimulation phase) so you can go right to the expression phase without waiting for the 2 minute stimulation phase to end.

Turn off the pump and unplug from the power source. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the motor and proceed as follows:
- Remove battery compartment cover from bottom of motor.
- Remove small, black foam piece from bottom of pump.
- Rinse the foam piece with clear lukewarm water, and squeeze out excess water. Allow to dry thoroughly before inserting back into pump.
- Pour about 2 ounces of warm soapy water into a container.
- Connect the tubing to the motor, leaving the other end unconnected.
- Connect the power cord to the motor, then plug into electrical outlet (do not power with battery).
- Hold the end of the tubing that is not connected to the pump in the container with the soapy water.
- Place the motor over a dry sink and switch on. The water will pump through the tubing into the motor and flow out through the opening beneath the battery cover. Allow it to pump until all the water has been flushed through.
- Repeat this procedure again with 2 ounces of warm clear water.
- Leave the motor switched on for an additional 3 minutes so it dries completely.
- As soon as the foam piece is dry, put it in place again, and re-install the battery compartment cover.
- If necessary, clean the pump kit according to cleaning instructions.

The tubings from the SNS should not be cleaned in the Micro-Steam bags. It is recommended to clean tubes by flushing with hot, soapy water and rinse.

The easiest way to change the flow is using the different sizes of tubing. The small tubing has a red valve, the medium has a white valve, and the large has a clear valve. The flow can also be adjusted by the height the system is worn. When the bottom of the SNS container is above the level of the nipple, the feed will flow more quickly. When the SNS is placed below the level of the nipple, the feed will flow slowly. The flow can be increased by gently squeezing the SNS container while the baby is feeding. Warming the feed can increase the flow.

- It is normal for pumped milk to vary in color and consistency depending on your diet. Stored milk will separate into layers and the cream will rise to the top. Gently swirl (don’t shake) the bottle to mix the milk layers.
- Avoid adding freshly pumped milk to already cooled milk. You can add small amounts of cooled breast milk to the same refrigerated container throughout the day.
- Pumped milk may be added to frozen milk provided it is first chilled and the quantity is less than what is frozen.
- Store your milk in Medela’s BPA-free breast milk collection bottles or in storage bags specifically designed for breast milk, such as Medela’s Pump & Save™ bags.
- Freeze milk in two (2) to four (4) ounce portions. Small amounts thaw more quickly. You will waste less milk this way. Be sure to leave some extra room at the top of the container so the bottle or bag will not overflow when freezing or thawing.
