Description

Prompt diagnosis and treatment of lactational mastitis is necessary to prevent breast abscess.  This presentation describes the unusual occurrence of extreme abscess formation.  Failure to consider abscess when the mother does not respond to first-line antibiotics can lead to delays in treatment and negatively impact breastfeeding.  The purpose of this case scenario is to aim at educating others in effective interventions to lessen the incidence of extreme breast pain and psychological distress associated with abscess.
