This course is specifically designed for nurses and other health professionals who care for mothers and babies throughout the labor/birth process and into the first 24 hours of life.  It reviews the evidence supporting important labor/birth and early postpartum practices that improve the stabilization of the newborn and affect the short and long-term success of breastfeeding.  Preventing hypoglycemia, improving temperature stability, gut colonization, immune system development, and decreased incidence of hyperbilirubinemia are discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the importance of nursing care in the first hours after birth on the success of breastfeeding.
  • List 3 unique health advantages provided by colostrum which can improve infant's stabilization and course of hospital stay.
  • Discuss hospital care management of the infant immediately after birth which will be least interruptive to the stabilization of the newborn and also increases breastfeeding success.
  • List reasons why breastpumping may need to be initiated while the mother is still in the Labor and Delivery unit.
  • Discuss risks to the infant by unnecessary supplementation with infant formula in the first few days of life.
