Lars Bode

Dr. Bode is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology and the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition. Dr. Bode received his Master of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences from the Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany, determining structural differences in human and bovine milk glycolipids. For his PhD thesis he investigated the effects of Human Milk Oligosaccharides on selectin-mediated cell-cell interaction in the immune system, which included a predoctoral fellowship in pediatric immunology at the Institute of Child Health, University College London. In 2003 Dr. Bode became a postdoctoral fellow in the Glycobiology and Carbohydrate Chemistry Program at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in La Jolla, California, where he elucidated the central role of heparan sulfate proteoglycans and heparin in pathogenesis and therapy of protein-losing enteropathy. In 2008 Dr. Bode received an NIH Pathway to Independence Award to obtain additional training in glycobiology and pediatric gastroenterology at UCSD and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In 2009 UCSD recruited Dr. Bode as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, where his lab is developing a new research program to elucidate functions and biosynthesis of Human Milk Oligosaccharides and other dietary glycans.
Dr. Bode is a faculty instructor and member of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center, and a member of the UCSD Digestive Disease Research Development Center and the Clinical & Translational Research Institute. Dr. Bode has been the Chair of the Lactation Research Interest Section (RIS) for the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and has been the Executive Council for the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation (ISRHML).
