Katie McGee

Katie McGee is an RN IBCLC in private practice in the Chicago suburbs and project manager for the Rush Mothers’ Milk Club, Chicago. She received her BSN from Marquette University, Wisconsin. She has been an accredited La Leche League Leader for over 10 years, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 2007, and with Rush University Medical Center’s NICU since 2009.

Katie is a mother of five and her first babies, twins, arrived at 30 weeks gestation. “I was an experienced pediatric nurse but still endured all of the stresses and anxieties of new NICU mothers.” Despite their prematurity, Katie was determined not to give up on her goal of breastfeeding. With expert lactation assistance from Dr. Paula Meier and high quality pumping equipment, Katie was able to achieve her goal and transition from exclusive pumping to exclusive and extended breastfeeding of her twins.

Katie believes in mother-to-mother breastfeeding support and has been involved with La Leche League first as a member and then as an accredited leader.  In her role at Rush, she works under the direction of Dr. Paula Meier in the same unit her twins had their NICU stay. She is part of a unique team of former NICU mothers turned Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, providing lactation care. She leads a 5 day training course for BPCs preparing for work in a hospital setting. Katie’s recent publication, “What mattered most: from NICU pump dependency to exclusive breastfeeding” appeared in Neonatal Intensive Care magazine.
