Marijuana and Mother's Milk in the NICU
With recreational marijuana use becoming legal in many states, women often assume it is safely used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and that it even enhances the milk supply. This presentation reviews the mechanism of function for marijuana and its transfer into the milk as well as recommendations by national associations and societies. A primary focus will be the potential impact of marijuana on the rapidly developing brain of the premature infant. A new education sheet that guides and facilitates health care providers’ discussions of marijuana with NICU families will be introduced.
1. Describe the mechanisms of function of marijuana and its transfer into mother's milk.
2. Cite the recommendations concerning marijuana use by national and international associations and societies.
3. Review development of the premature infant brain from 24 weeks’ gestation until term with respect to the potential impact of marijuana in mothers’ milk.
4. Discuss the use of a new educational sheet for health care providers to use with NICU families, Marijuana and Providing Milk for a NICU Baby.
