Supporting Breastfeeding During COVID-19

The novel coronavirus has impacted all aspects of our lives. For new mothers, this has an added level of significance: will I be able to be with my baby if I test positive? Will I be able to breastfeed and get the support I need?  In this presentation, we will look at the evolving recommendations about postpartum care for the breastfeeding mother/baby dyad and explore the reasons breast milk is so important in these difficult times.


 

·        State reasons potential reasons for the difference in illness manifestations between adults and children

·        Realize that all major organizations agree that the provisions of breast milk is important and should be a priority in this pandemic.

·        Review the statistical concepts of sensitivity and specificity of tests and how they may impact clinical decision-making.

·        Discuss the impact of human milk on the developing immune system

·        Understand the importance of skin-to-skin care in the infants’ transition to extrauterine life

·        Understand what new sources of stress we are all facing and how they impact our advocacy
