Medela to Partner with Office on Women’s Health for National Women’s Health Week
MCHENRY, Ill., May 11, 2012 – In honor of Mother’s Day and nursing women everywhere, Medela, Inc. announces its partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health for the observance of National Women’s Health Week, May 13-19. A long-time champion of breastfeeding, Medela is proud to support this weeklong initiative to celebrate and empower women to make their health a top priority.
“Supporting the health and breastfeeding journey of moms and babies is at the heart of everything we do,” said Carolin Archibald, president of Medela. “Breastfeeding has health benefits not only for babies, but for their moms as well. Medela is excited to once again partner with the National Women’s Health Week to promote the health and well-being of women everywhere.”
Throughout the week, Medela will be sharing health tips for women online via its social media channels and Medela Moments blog. Additionally, Medela will host a live chat with breastfeeding advocate and lactation counselor Julie Hamilton on Wednesday, May 16 at 10am Central Time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breastfeeding can reduce mom’s risk of type II diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and post-partum depression. For Medela, supporting women’s health is a priority not just during National Women’s Health Week, but throughout the year. Since its inception, Medela has demonstrated a commitment to research designed to support breastfeeding mothers and their babies. This dedication to breastfeeding science can be seen in Calma, a research-based nipple used with a BPA-free breastmilk bottle designed to help babies to maintain their natural feeding behavior and transition from bottle back to breast with ease. Calma is the first breastmilk feeding solution based on new breastfeeding science of milk removal from the breast. Research was also the foundation of the Symphony Preemie+ pumping suction pattern for the hospital grade breastpump. Through research, Medela discovered the addition of this unique pumping pattern can help mothers of premature infants pump nearly 75% more breastmilk over the first 14 days after birth than mothers who did not use the pattern. By using this unique pumping pattern, mothers can pump more milk during this critical time, helping their fragile babies tolerate feedings and ward off infections and other serious complications.
